Well if you don't want any messes in the house, then I would start off with a belly band right away.

Some belly bands are made to where you have to put a disposable pad on the belly band and just throw the pad away each time. I myself think that would be a pain and rather pricey too.

I go with the belly bands that have a middle layer that absorbs the moisture keeping your house safe. And when it gets dirty, all you have to do is wash it.

So it is all a matter of preference that determines what belly band to go with.
