if they pee right on the very edge you may get some under, but it does seem to absorb almost instantly if they have any aim at all. They are expensive, but in the long run a much better bargain than disposable....which mine seem to view as a cool shredding toy to make snow with. I have been using these for more than a year and they get washed a few times a week and are still holding up well.
My favorite use of these is in the whelping box....no more worrying about mama burying pups in the bedding....and good traction for tiny little legs trying out first wobbly steps.

I haven't tried the regular washable ones so I can't offer a comparison.
