I think he needs the water. I have a recyling water bowl for my tribe--Holly and 3 cats-so they don't run out during the day and it keeps the water fresh. I would restrict his area while you are out-a gate to keep him in the kitchen? Or an ex-pen. Then the mess is contained. Good luck.
