For crate training you don't want to put food or water in with them. Nor do you want to put a blanket in there. If your puppy is small then you'll want to let him out after a couple hours or so. I would offer food and water then. As they get older then you increase the time that they're in the kennel. When Reuger was no longer peeing or pooping in the kennel (and had full use of the whole kennel) I put a blanket in with him.

If you've made the kennel smaller and he's still going in it, then I would say he still has too much room. He still has room to go in one corner and sleep in the other corner. I would add another small box and make his space smaller yet and see how that goes.
