Once I left Stewie for 14 hours. He wasn't destructive and dind't have a potty accident. I leave him alone at most 6 hours. He sleeps most of the time. I dont think it is cruel to leave your dog home alone while you're at work, especially if you can't make it home during lunch or afford to hire someone to visit them or put them in doggy daycare.
I think if you leave your dog alone while you're at work you should make sure they have plenty of toys, food and water. Also, it would be ideal for them to have somewhere to get cozy and sleep while you're gone. Stewie loves his fur bear that is the same size as him. He fights and cuddles with it.
