If he is going to the bathroom in the house when you're not at home, then the only way to correct the problem is to confine him. If you don't like putting him in the crate, then use an x-pen or put him in the kitchen with a baby gate or something. But, he will not learn unless he is confined. In my opinion, crate training is the best and fastest way for a puppy to learn to be potty trained. But, you cannot leave a young puppy in its crate for more than a couple of hours. So, if you will not be able to take him out at least every 2-3 hours, then you may want to consider an x-pen over the crate. I know the puppy may hate the crate now, but he will get used to it and learn to love it. Hobbs hated his at first and I hated putting him in there. But, now he loves it!

GOOD LUCK!
