My sympathies to your family. It's got to be tough. I think a puppy will help them both. It will not replace him certainly, but will give them both something to concentrate on & will give them soemthing to love & be happy about.
Make sure to take pics of the puppy as it grows...I'm curious as to what it'll look like. I've got the Yorkie & had a doxy since I was 13 (my parents had to have her put to sleep earlier this year) so they are both breeds that have a special place in my heart.
