In the first few months, things are happening so fast that the shorter time reference is important. Having one that's 14 weeks tomorrow, I've been tempted sometimes to give her age in days - she changes so much even day to day.

At some point in time (probably 4 or 5 months, as you said) the changes slow down enough that age by month is enough to explain where your furbaby is along the development line.
