I also do get confused with the fact with the term Back Yard Breeders, am I one.? Sometimes if fustrates me and I ask is there a Masters Program in breeding at Harvard or Yale or does years of experience give a person the mastery in breeding. In my travels I have met some breeders who live in homes just normal people who breed quality dogs and are down to earth people and I have met others who have titles and ribbons and are the biggest snobs. I am keenly aware of the overpopulation of dogs however, I feel that if a person is willing to keep the dogs that don't sell are breeding for conformation or changes or breeding out certain traits and not for the money are good breeders. Not for AKC papers or CKC papers or for the littlest Yorkies or the most expensive ones. There is no Tea cup yorkie they are dangerously small high mortality rate and are very expensive, now are they Back Yard Breeders the people who breed these rare dogs.
They have diagnosed people with hoarding as a mental illness the powers that be. I don't agree or disagree, I feel if it impends on you daily function then it is a problem. My best dog did not have any papers and due to that one fact it kept her from entering certain things. I don't believe that a person has to wait for 20 years to breed dogs to learn about top lines or floating patellas or overbites, it takes time and trust and intuition and maybe a mentor or two but you can do it. If a person wanted to look at horrible situations look at the puppy mills and let the people who breed quality dogs from homes reading books on the internet networking with others asking questions going to shows crying over losses keeping Vets very busy alone in there world with their animals that they absolutely love. In reference to papers I do understand Pedigree but it cannot outweigh a dogs quality. I learned this the hard way. I now would buy a dog with a good disposition good health socialized happy rather than a dog with great pedigree papers etc but none of the aforementioned. So I am a Back Yard Breeder.....
