its not really a surgery per say and its not a 100% fix. After the vet unclogs them there is always a chance they'll clog again. What happens is that the vet puts your dog under and then takes a syringe filled with saline and green dye (the same dye used to stain the eye is there is a scratch on the cornea) and tries to feed it thru the tear duct to wash it out and push out whatever is stuck in there. The tear ducts are connected to the nose and mouth so green dye should start coming out the nose a tiny bit. It doesn't hurt the dog, but its very hard to get a dog to stand still while a tube is being put in there tear duct. its a simple procedure and only lasts a couple minutes. the dog isn't under very long. If your dog is due for a dental or any other procedure you can always as your vet to unclog them then to make is easier on the dog.
