I read an article a long time ago that any spanking, even with a newspaper, is a no-no. It makes the dog think going potty is bad - period. Then what happens is they hold it cuz they think its a bad thing to do. That's probably why he went 3 times inside. He was scared to pee and couldn't hold it, then tried to hide it by going in a different spot.

It would be much better if you make a huge deal and celebrate when he goes potty out side. Encourage him with treats and praise him like he just did the most incredible thing.

It worked wonders with Jewel and she was a tough girl to potty train!

Better to reinforce good behavior instead of the bad.

Let us know what you decide to do and how it works out. I'm sure you are going to get bunch of advise.
I'm surprised your dog faught back! For our dogs, alls we had to do was hit them w/ the paper on one or two occasions. From that point on if they messed up alls I had to do was grab a paper, roll it up and show it to them. Then they knew they were caught.
