I'm not sure about all the contol stuff, but here's how I do it:
I hold my left mouse key down and slide it over what I want highlighted and then let up. I point the arrow at the highlighted line or whatever is highlighted and right click on it. A box drops down and you can copy, paste, delete or whatever you want to do.
I find the less steps I have to do is easiest. I use my mouse for most anything instead of hitting the keys.
