I think I would be worried about the smell being an infection too. Did you ever get a thermometer? Anything over 103 I would be going to the emergency vet. I think sleeping is the body's way of recovering so that wouldn't bother me as much. He has to at least be drinking though, pedialyte would be best. Keep us posted, I'll say a prayer.
