The velcro's are very, very secure. They overlapped and are about anywhere between 1 1/2" to 2". How much does your baby weigh? My Tiger is a "puller" and he is 5 pounds and I one time had to pick him up in a hurry as we thought we were being attacked by another dog and I just relied on the leash and pulled so hard . . .and it did not give way . . .

I do have a step-in harness that is buckled from the back and just as good. Depending on your baby, I have a hard time putting them on my furkids so I prefer the velcro type. Either option should be a safe one.
