I've been fortunate and have never encountered your situation in the 8 years I've had Jazzie. I'm usually holding her or she is sitting in the Kid part of the shopping cart buckled in using the restraint from the Lookout seat belt in stores that allows dogs (like Lowes or Home Depot).
