I had a horrible experience with dark chocolate and my greyhound.....but learned a GREAT LESSON about doggie first aide.
I had been shopping for "extras" ...getting ready to bake for Christmas. I had a large grocery bag with 'melting chocolate' and 2 bags of 'semi-sweet dark chocolate chips' set in the floor (by the stairs to go to the basement pantry for whoever went down the stairs next).....
Needless to say the bag was forgotten and left there overnight...My greyhound NEVER CHEWS UP ANYTHING........but that night my husband woke up to a funny 'noise' @ 1:30 am.....it was the greyhound trying to rip open the bag of melting chocolate...she had already finished off the 2 BAGS OF SEMI-SWEET CHIPS!!! 24 ounces total!!!!!!!
He woke me up...just because he thought I should clean up the mess....I knew chocolate was TOXIC but he was convinced the dog would be fine!!!
I call the 24 hour emergency vet...they told me to get her to the clinic ASAP....but first give her peroxide and make her vomit....
I had to give her 15 cc's of peroxide..(by large syringe...I am a home nurse and have that kind of stuff in my car)...no vomit...gave her 15 MORE cc's of 'fresh' peroxide...then closed her up in the bathroom.
Within 10 minutes we heard her "erupting" in there!!!!!
My hubby had to use a SNOW SHOVEL to get that giant pile of chocolate vomit up from the floor.
I told him I was sorry he had to do that..he said "no problem....it smelled kinda good".....(YUK)
She was extremely sick for a week after that....one of the wost effects she had long term was VERY SWOLLEN JOINTS AND MUSCLES in her back legs....very painful.
Lessons learned......
1) peroxide will make a dog vomit...have used it again with the chihuahua who was found eating fire ant granules!!!!!
2) peroxide can get old..the stuff in my cabinet was 'old'...but the stuff in my car was 'fresh'
3) Never underestimate any dog...they can and will chew up something ...eventually! |
