I've never crate trained in my life. Gating mine into a smaller area is the route we always used and it has always worked. Mine are housebroken at around six months of age, too.
They'll tell you when they need to go if you pay attention. Good luck to you. We use door bells to go outside or in the garage on pads at night or in bad weather.
