Default [News] Keeping Pets Safe This Halloween

Just avoid giving your Yorkie chocolate!!! And have a safe one!
---
SEATTLE - Halloween can be a scary and dangerous time for the pets in your family.

Those sweet treats around the house smell mighty tempting to your critters. You don't want them swallowing candy wrappers or eating chocolate.

"Chocolate can be dangerous, if not deadly to animals, particularly dogs," warns Nancy McKenney, CEO of the Humane Society for Seattle/King County. "Put the candy in a place where the animals are not going to have access to it."

While you look forward to those little ghosts and goblins yelling "trick or treat," the costumes and noise can scare your pets. If they panic, they may head for that open door and run away.

"What we recommend is just play it safe." McKenney says, "by having the animals kept in a nice quite area of the house away from the front door or access to the front door."

Remember, curious pets can burn themselves on the candle inside a lit pumpkin, or knock a candle over resulting in a fire.

That's why the Humane Society says it's best to avoid candles if you have a companion animal in the house.
