Have you tried putting him on a leash and keeping him right at your side? Another good suggestion I read about was having a small xpen set up outside just to go potty in.
Gus didn't hunt but was distracted by every little thing so it would take a long time for him to go. Now that he knows the command for potty he is good at going when I tell him then he is allowed to play (at night just a minute or two).
Mostly, it is patience, being consistent and just a matter of time. Good luck.
