I've never actually done it for a dog, but it worked for our cat. He was Sugar and I changed it to Smokey.

My old dog was named Misty, and I always have made up nicknames for them. After she was like 7 I started calling her Babes. Its not that I didnt like Misty, I just started calling her Babes. Right away she answered to that right away. Im just wondering pretty much about the papers for the dog you know...how will I go about that?
