I think you should name him what you are comfortable with. You'll be calling that name for many years to come! I've heard that the way to change the name is at first call him by both. Let's say his name is Joe and you want Ralph. For the first few days you call him JoeRalph every time you call him. Then you can just drop the Joe and they will recognize Ralph. I've never actually done it for a dog, but it worked for our cat. He was Sugar and I changed it to Smokey.
