I would say morning, after playing, after naps and just anytime that they seem to be looking for a place to go to the bathroom.

I'm not sure about the pee pads because, I'm fortunate enough that I don't have to use them. We have a hughe fenced in back yard and a doggie door which is wonderful. We have had the door up since Feb and Wyatt is now 10 months old and he has only pooped in the house twice and both times it was while I was gone and he couldn't get out. He hasn't peed anywhere(yet).

Good Luck
