When I first got Oscar, he had quite a few matts in his hair - including on his legs. (Just when you think you've conquered them all, you find one of those ever elusive little wee ones that are just big enough to catch on your comb...). I would cut the really stubborn ones - it's easier on you and the dog. If they aren't big, you wont even notice and the shorter hair will blend in with the rest of his coat. There are some sprays you can get at pet stores that are for detangling and matts - just spray on and leave for 10 minutes or so, seems to help loosen it up a bit... plus they smell nice.
As a side note, Oscar just had his ENTIRE BEARD shaved off because of one MONSTER matt he's had under there since the day I got him (past the point of no-return, the vet shaved it off while he was out for his neuter). All I can say is keep on top of it - One night of a couple hours getting all those matts out will pay off and mean only a couple minutes of brushing for the days that follow. |
