I think that a pool vaccuum would work just fine and save you alot of work. I just picked up stuff at Wal-mart. I think that it was Sock-it. We also bought algeacide that did the same thing but was in liquid form. I bought it at Wal-mart too. I think that the filter is just to filter out the dead algea. We never had a problem with using it and we used it for years. I did find out that you don't want to store Sock-it in the house. I put it in a cupboard and forgot it was there and it corroded the hinges and all the metal that was inside the cupboard.
