Hi - I couldn't help but comment on some of the posts in this thread. First of all I sympatize with the desire for a Yorkie to be what the breed standard describes. Isn't size one of the reasons we pick out a Yorkie? I have had 2 Yorkies and on Monday will be picking up my third puppy. My first "Yorkie" was a whopping 20lbs!! I loved every ounce of him! At the time I got him I had no idea what a Yorkie puppy should look like. He was 5 1/2 lbs at 12 weeks old and the breeder told me he was "done growing". He was short legged, had a long body, his huge ears were hopelessly down (she said they'd go up), his nose was long. He was anything but "right" according to the standard, but I absolutely LOVED him. I don't think it is right for breeders to lie. My vet took one look at Tobey and said if I wanted a Yorkie to BRING HIM BACK! But my heart was already tied with his... So later we got a second one. This time we did our research. Pepper is a wonderful dog, but he is 9 1/2 lbs. According to the chart, according to triple 8 weeks, and double 12 weeks he should have been 6 1/2 lbs. He never quit growing. At a year old we think he is done. I think some breeders are not being honest when they say the mother is 5lbs and dad is 3lbs. I really wish I would have had the courage with this third puppy to ask the breeder to put the mom and dad on a scale in front of me! I'm sorry, but this mother doesn't look like 7lbs to me. But I love the puppy! She was 1 lb 14 oz last time I visited and she was 8 weeks old. Who knows how she'll turn out. I'm prepared to love her whatever the size, but I sure do wish breeders would be a little more careful about the quality of dogs they are breeding. I wish I could be sure they were being honest. I don't like to challenge a person's integrity, I like to believe what I'm told! As to the "chart" - I'm thankful for it. I fully realize it is intended for her dogs and that it is only a guide, but I rather like it. I think it is going to be fun to see how my newest puppy will follow the chart! I just hope she fits the standard this time! Smiles to all!!!~ |
