This is brand new..... the light attaches to the leash about 6" from the snap. The design allows the light to be removed when not needed. In fact, if you wanted to hang the light from the leash handle, that would work as well

The light/battery compartment screws together very securely.... the information that came with the blinkies states that the batteries are supposed to last for 8 hours. I am going to have to test that BEFORE I commit to saying that they WILL last that long. I don't want to mislead anyone
