The couple of times I have ignored him he went to the bathroom on the floor. I tried just leaving him outside when he wants to come back in (just ignored him while he barked outside the door), but that didn't work because the door is too close to where we are & I can't take the barking so the most I could do is about 7-10 minutes. This has not worked. When will this stop? When/if I get him neutered will that make him stop? Thanks for your help. I read lots of good stuff on these boards.

If you can install a doggie door. Mine where doing the same to me. Driving me absolutely crazy. Now they come and go as they please. Most definitely a god send. I love it. I will never be without one again.
