Take comfort in this: Nikko was exactly the same way at that age. He was a total squirmer and if you tried to hold him or hug him he would squirm and wiggle until he would get loose from your arms. Now at 1 year old, he is MUCH calmer and actually climbs on my lap when I am watching tv. I kiss and hug and squeeze him and he doesn't even move. I think he even likes it because he kisses me back!!
The trick is to keep hugging him and petting him even if he doesn't like it. I think eventually they get used to it.
