My girls wear their collars all the time. I don't have a fenced yard so when they need out, I just clip on the rope that is tethered in the yard and out they go. I know it is dangerous for them to wear collars but I have them both in the break away cat collars and it helps me feel a little bit better.
They run away if not tied up.
