I think you are doing just fine. Dogs do sleep most of the time, whether we are around or not. This way, he gets all his sleeping in, then can be awake to be with you. Besides, the kitchen is big enuff. The treat ball is a great idea. I have a friend whose poodle goes nuts with it, and will play for a long time.
