I free fed all day until we went to sleep around 10 or 11p.m.

I think when your crate training then it should be just enough room for them to stand up and turn around and lay down. That is what teaches them to hold their bladder through the night. Then they will not soil their sleeping area. If you give them to much room then they don't know the difference. This is how I have did all my puppies. Also how my mom has did hers and it works great. JMO and my experience.
