Did you try the ticking clock idea, or a stuffed animal in the crate as well? When I first brought my bulldog home he whined a bit. I talked to my vet about the next day. They told me to keep the crate in a distant room, so that we didnt lose our sleep. But that it was just the puppy needing to adjust to his new arrangements. Of course mine wasnt howling either, but I def. wouldnt start the sleeping in your bed. I also tried leaving the tv and radio on at night next to the crate. Makes em feel like not everyone has deserted him. He got over the whining after 2 days. And became to like his crate. My yorkie never has made a peep when getting in his crate. He's a great dog.
But if you havent tried the clock, try the tv or radio. Hope this helps somewhat. Good luck!
