This is what we found that works. They sell absorbent crib liners so we put that in the bottom then put a fitted crib sheet over it. When Logan was a puppy & potting in their pretty offend (he couldn't hold it for longer than 2 hours until he was 8months old), we would take all the bedding out once a week & soak with odor remover (nature miracle) and then run it through the wash. It took us a couple months to figure this out. If he pees directly on the playpen bottom it soaks in & is hard as all get out to get the smell out of the pad.

When we first started we would put Logan in a cage at night for bedtime & the playpen during the day so he'd have more room. He cried all the time in the cage, but not at all in the playpen. One night when he wouldnt shutup we moved him to the playpen so we could get some sleep & he hasn't cried since. This just may be him though.
