You need to find out how many photos can be taken in "BURST" - meaning consecutively before the camera's buffer is filled. The shutter speed has nothing to do with how many photos you can take in a row.
I'm a Canon lover. I have owned the D60, 10D and now a 1D Mark II. The digital rebel really isn't a bad camera to begin with.
You can always visit local dealers to be able to test equipment hands on and then order from B&H where you can get a better price.
Your camera will only be as good as the glass you put in front of it. If you invest into a cheap lens, you'll get less than great quality photos.
