Lower quality foods usually produce more poop so you may want to check on switching him to a higher quality if this is the case.

Sounds like your both doing great on potty training to me. You might want to get one of those underbed storage boxes, ya know, they're clear plastic the size of a potty pad. Then cut an entrance in one side. This will keep the puppy and the pee on the pad. This is a common problem. They think that as long as one foot is on the pad then it's all good! Doing this will also help them by teaching them that rugs are not potty pads which is another problem.
