I would definitely say what you're doing is a rescue and in the best interest of the cat. Fugly's not a very nice name to begin with, doesn't sound like they cared about him all that much with such a name and to leave him outside and not feed him. He'll be much better off with you!! Sounds like you're a regular Dr. Doolittle around there.
