Topher was miserable with the cone on as well, so I took it off. Surprisingly he didn't bother his stitches much at all. From time to time he'd try to give them a lick, but as he's with me all the time, I was able to distract him with something else. He healed up fine.
I'd take the cone off...give it a try for a while to see if he bothers the stitches much. I can't imagine trying to get comfy with that huge thing around my neck!
