Honestly, don't be so afraid or hesitant because they pick up on that. Just make sure that first you get the STAY or STOP command down. Then just try it in an area where they can't escape too far, and don't be too nervous. If you feel safer, just get a light long leash, but for me it really just happened because she understood the STOP command well, she just freezes in her tracks. I put her down for what I thought was a second, but she just walked right along with me. In fact she saw a dog and wanted to go run to it, but I said STOP in a firm tone and she looked at me, gave out a cry and went up the stairs to my house She did beautifully. I think if you have enough confidence in your baby, that she/he won't run off try it. Just make sure you keep working the STOP/STAY command first.
