That's a tough one. Eddie used to run away fairly regularly when he got out. The only way I could get him to stop immediately was to scream loud. It was so out of character for me, I think, that he paid attention.
But I hate screaming at him, and I'm not sure it's a good idea. So I started letting him off-leash in the front yard and saying "uh-uh" every time he approached the street or somewhere I didn't want him to go. When he stopped, I rewarded him. Sometimes, I'd walk over to him and give him a treat.
When he ran or walked somewhere he wasn't supposed to go, I calmly tracked him down and brought him in the house and ignored him.
I think it has helped. He rarely runs away from me any more, and the old screaming thing still works in the rare emergency.
