The female should be larger...you know I hear this often, WHY should the female be larger? Why has this become "rule of thunb"..that the female is larger?
Do people think it affects the size of the puppies at birth? At maturity?
You've got many generations (both sides) determining what size puppies are going to be at maturity, and MOST Yorkie litters size at birth is dependant not upon how big dad was, but how well fed mom is, how many puppies she's carrying (obviously a large litter will often have some smaller puppies), or mom's size if she is abnormally large (9+ lbs pre pregnancy)..in which case it's a given you are going to use a smaller male because mom is not within standard.
Really just to clear up the misconception, it is NOT necissary to use a smaller male than female. I have very successfully whelped litters where the male was over a full lb bigger (both were in standard) and had no problems what so ever, nor especially large puppies. I've also whelped a litter where mom and dad were exact same size (allowing an ounce or two)..pups were all in the 3-4 oz range, no issues.
The problem is these morons who think it's okay to use a 12 lb male with a 6 lb female. Obviously the 12 lb male just needs to be neutered!
