Maybe she just really had to go!
You said she's getting older... She could be becoming incontinent as she ages.
It could also be some kind of bladder/urinary tract infection. If it happens again I'd take her to the vet to rule out any possible health issues.
I wouldn't worry too much about her just laying in it... My dog does the same thing sometimes!
