When Topher went in to get neutered almost two weeks ago, I asked the vet to check his teeth and to remove the baby teeth that hadn't fallen out yet. He had already lost quite a few baby teeth, but I knew he had some 'doubles'..I just wasn't sure how many.
She ended up removing three baby teeth and to her surprise, one of the teeth had a root that was TWO INCHES LONG!! She said that in all her years of practice, she had never seen such a thing. It's a good thing that I didn't wait for the tooth to fall out, 'cause it never would have come out on it's own. She said that we probably would have ended up with loads of problems down the road. As it was, she said that there was lots of 'stuff' stuck between the teeth already (and I clean Topher's teeth regularly).
I would suggest having the baby teeth pulled if the adult teeth have already come in and the teeth are crowded. Having it done while the pup is being spayed or neutered is convenient as the pup is already under anaesthesia anyway. I wouldn't have liked Topher to have to go through another separate 'surgery' to deal with the teeth.
