Confused Housetraining problems

Hi, all!

I'm a first-time Yorkie owner and new to this site; it's my first post. I've had other dogs in the past, toy poodles, Sheltie, and don't know if it's fair to compare them to a Yorkie.

Pilla (pronounced Pee-ya, Spanish for Rascal) is almost 5 months old, and we've had her about 6 weeks. We decided to litter train her rather than take her outside. She absolutely knows what the litter pan is for, because if I catch her in the act and tell her to "go get in the pan", she runs right into it. But if she's left to run around on her own, she'll poop and pee wherever she pleases. We'll show her the mess, tell her, "no, that's bad" in a stern voice, bring her to the pan and say, "you go in your pan".

Another part of the problem is that sometimes she'll pee just outside of the pan. It looks like she might have her front legs inside the pan and leaves the back end out and just pees! Does that mean the pan is too small for her? Geez, she's only 2-1/2 lbs!

It's getting really frustrating. I don't remember it taking this long in the past with my other dogs to train them. Do Yorkies just take longer? Am I missing something? HELP.........anybody?
