I am very much like your husband I am a clean freak!!! I am actually border line complulsive with it, I clean everyday no matter what. My hubby likes everything clean as well. The only diffrence is I NEVER believe in having an outdoor animal unless its a farm animal. We had a yorkie before for two years and he never potty trained, I got prego with our first child and me and hubby decided it was time to rehome him.
We have a brand new house we just built and its only 6 mths old, we decided to try another yorkie and we got hannah around 5 mths ago, we were both very worried about accidents, but we playpen trained her I guess thats kinda like crate training. And we got VERY lucky our girl seemed to instanlty know what to do and not to do. She never whined unless she had to potty and she never pottied in her play pen or the house, hopefully you will get lucky too.
It will be hard alot of pups whine and bark for a while, they can be compared to a newborn baby they will wake you up to potty a few times in the middle of the night at first, and they will have accidents the truth is some small dogs NEVER potty train, that is something anyone should think about before getting a small dog its a big responsibility and we failed at that the first time a round.
