Floating ribs are normal. We have them. Our last two ribs (on the bottom) are attached only to the spine - and not to the sternum....hence, they are called "floating ribs."

I worked in x-ray for almost 30 years and have seen these ribs on films hundreds of times.

I supposed depending on their shape, etc., they could cause some problems, but normally they don't represent any problem at all - because this is the way they are supposed to be.
