My pup doesn't wear a collar either -- but we do have one for special occasions....with his name and phone number on them.
Whenever he is wearing a collar - I am close by and keep an eye on him.
You could just take a diaper pin and pin his tags onto his harness. Or, for the weekend, you could sew them on.
