My parents are basically animal shelter unto themselves they take in strays and rescues all the time. I think they have like 6 or 7 dogs now, mostly large breeds and a couple small breeds including a YORKIE and a lot of thier dogs were abused and very timid and afraid when they frist got them but they have all adjusted just fine and are happy healthy dogs now.
It just takes time for them to trust again and learn that they won't be abused anymore anad that your husband is not going to hurt him. Just be patient and gentle, it might take a couple of months but he'll come around I'm sure.
