I thought it would take a long time to train Ranger to potty outside, but with persistance (and patience) he was trained in a few months.

Everytime we took Ranger outside we would say it aloud and we'd ask him if he needed to potty. We would do this about every hour for a few days, then less and less. After a month or so he didn't have to potty as often and having an eating schedule we knew about when he'd need to potty. Even if he had an accident we didn't scold him, it was our fault for not paying attention. When he did something good we used positive reinforcement.

Now when I ask if he wants to go outside (to play) or if he needs to potty, if he wants outside he stands next to the door, if not he continues what he's doing. When we don't ask he'll go to the door anyways and if we don't notice he gets our attention

But every time we go outside he goes potty no matter how badly he needs to or not. Now we just need to teach him how to hike his leg
