The books say an average life span of a toy dog like a Yorkie is 12 yrs to 13 yrs. Every year after 12 is a bonus. I have had some live to 15, but most go around 14..one made it to 17.
Many things factor into a long life..spay/neutering, good dental care, proper diet and exercise., genetics..just like with us humans. When an older dog gets cranky I always tell the owner to get a vet check, usually they find the dog has pain of some sort. Perhaps it is bad teeth or infection in the gums, arthritis etc. |
