Default Jumping on people

Kirby has one bad habit that I would like to curb, he tends to jump on people when he gets excited. Some non-dog people don't find this beahvior 'cute' and I have to admit that I would rather he didn't do it.

He does it to me too but responds to 'down' and holding the palm of my hand out at him. I don't encourage the behavior but there are times when I respond to it and will play with him or pick him up so I know this is reinforcing the behavior so I need to stop this, so assuming that I stop doing that what is good way to teach him not to jump on people?

Things I've read include, stepping on their hind feet, kneeing them in the chest (large breeds) etc... those are methods that I'm not comfortable using with Kirby any other non-painful methods?
